History

OpenShift was introduced in 2011 by Red Hat as a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). Early versions were based on a proprietary container technology before OpenShift 3 in 2015 fully transitioned to Kubernetes and Docker. This realignment made OpenShift one of the first enterprise Kubernetes platforms on the market.

With OpenShift 4, released in 2019, the platform was fundamentally redesigned: the foundation shifted to Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS, and Operator-based lifecycle management became the central management concept. Today, OpenShift is one of the most widely used Kubernetes distributions in enterprises worldwide and is offered both on-premises and in the cloud (as Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS, Azure, and IBM Cloud).
