History
Rancher was founded in 2014 by Rancher Labs with the goal of making Kubernetes and container technologies more accessible to enterprises. The first version of the platform initially supported Docker Swarm and Mesos before fully shifting focus to Kubernetes. Rancher 2.0 in 2018 marked a complete restart built entirely on Kubernetes.
In December 2020, SUSE acquired Rancher Labs and integrated the platform into its enterprise portfolio. Since then, Rancher has been developed further as "SUSE Rancher Prime", targeting organizations that require a robust multi-cluster Kubernetes management solution.
