Crossplane - K8S Native Platform Engineering

Two days of intensive introduction to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Crossplane. Build and manage cloud infrastructure directly through Kubernetes.

Cloud infrastructures are becoming more complex and larger. With Crossplane, companies can model infrastructure and platform APIs directly within Kubernetes. Crossplane extends Kubernetes into a full control plane for infrastructure, enabling declarative provisioning, automation, and abstraction of resources across multiple providers.

Content

In this course, we will work together to gradually build a platform based on Crossplane and Kubernetes. Our focus is on a targeted selection of topics to provide a deep understanding of the following concepts:

  • Introduction to Crossplane and its architecture
  • Providers, Managed Resources & their lifecycle
  • Introduction to XRDs (CompositeResourceDefinitions)
  • Compositions & Claims: abstraction and self-service
  • Functions and Providers
  • Secrets and connection management
  • Multi-tenancy & governance with Namespaces and RBAC
  • Observability & debugging Crossplane
  • Security (least privilege, secret handling, provider identities)
  • Crossplane im Enterprise-Einsatz (Packages, RuntimeConfiguration, Best Practices)

This course is suitable for both beginners and advanced users and offers a cloud-agnostic approach, meaning the concepts can be applied across different providers.

We look forward to building a flexible and scalable platform together!

The actual course content may differ from the above depending on the trainer, delivery, duration and the composition of participants.

More about Crossplane

Crossplane is an open-source project under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) that extends Kubernetes into a full control plane for infrastructure. It allows defining and managing infrastructure resources such as databases, buckets, or networks just like Kubernetes objects.

History

Crossplane was created by Upbound in 2018 and donated to the CNCF in 2020. The goal was to extend Kubernetes concepts to infrastructure and provide a common API for different cloud providers.

Since then, Crossplane has evolved into a key building block of modern platform engineering strategies. With the introduction of Compositions and XRDs, Crossplane allows companies to define their own platform APIs and provide self-service for developers.

Today, Crossplane is used globally by companies of all sizes and is considered a cornerstone of "Infrastructure as Code" in Kubernetes-centered environments.
