Istio is an open-source service mesh that provides a uniform way to connect, secure, control, and observe microservices. Founded in 2017 by Google, IBM, and Lyft, it is now a graduated project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF).

History

Istio was founded in May 2017 as an open-source project by Google, IBM, and Lyft. It is built on the Envoy Proxy, originally developed at Lyft, and extends it with a powerful control plane for managing service-to-service communication in Kubernetes clusters.

In 2022, Istio was donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and was recognized as a graduated CNCF project in September 2023. With the introduction of Ambient Mode in Istio 1.18, a sidecar-free alternative to the classic sidecar architecture has been available since 2023, simplifying operations and reducing resource consumption.
